BVSD Food Waste Audit:  Be a Food Waste Warrior!

Each day in our cafeteria, a lot of food is thrown out in the garbage after lunch. This waste impacts our environment in many different ways, and wastes valuable resources.
How much food is wasted each day?  We’ll find out over 6 different lunch periods this spring
After eating lunch, the School Food Project staff and student helpers from the 7-8 Environmental Committee will be sorting and weighing student lunch trash.
Through a grant from the World Wildlife Fund, students will learn about the ways in which food impacts the environment by recording data from the student food waste audits. Teachers and students will then receive that data, and can use it to support science, math and literacy within their classrooms and hopefully contribute to new initiatives to reduce food waste at our school.
These are the dates of our upcoming food waste audits:
Monday, March 18
Tuesday, March 19
Thursday, May 9
Friday, May 10
Tuesday, May 14
For more information, contact:  katie.ewig@bvsd.org

CBS Denver 4 - Mar. 14  ‘Food Waste Warriors’ Help Educate To Reduce Waste At School    Some elementary and middle school students in Colorado are learning how the food they don’t eat impacts the world around them. They’re becoming “Food Waste Warriors.” “I feel like our world needs to change for the better right now,” said one Meadowlark student.

REMINDER: There is NO parking on the outside perimeter of the front parking lot (the Early Childhood/Visitor parking).  Parking your car on the perimeter makes it very difficult for some vehicles to get into the actual parking spaces and unsafe for our students and parents who are accessing that lot.  We realize our society is a “hurry, hurry, hurry” pace but you are reminded if the lot spaces are fulll, you will then need to park on the street and walk in.

Lost & Found: We will have lost and found up on tables in the CWing March 18-22.  All items not claimed by the end of Friday, March 22 will be donated over spring break.

School Picture Day is October 27, 2017.  Order forms will be coming home soon!
PARENTS - please aim for 8:30 am drop off and building entry!  Student learning starts at 8:40 am. End of day is 3:40 pm.  If you need your student out before 3:40 pm, please call by noon so we can have your student ready and waiting in the Welcome Center for you.  Last minute pick ups with no prior notification to the office creates disruption throughout the school.
For after school activities/athletics, please make arrangements ahead of time with your student about where you will meet them for pick up.  Remember that the front office closes at 4pm, so there isn’t staff available to let you in to find your student.

The MAVERICK Fun Run - To give your child the best educational experience possible, we’re excited to raise funds to help develop our Makers Culture and equip our five creative design areas in our building. Students will begin brainstorming, interviewing, researching andpurchasing technology, equipment and supplies for the makerspaces used in the design and engineering processes that will be the core of our instructional program.

By now, you have heard and read about the MAVERICK Fun Run campaign. This is our primary and one major fund raiser here at Meadowlark School.  Our school goal is to raise $75,000 and we know together we can pull this off!  To help us power this event, we have partnered with Boosterthon.  They are providing the resourses and staff to help our students and staff plan and execute.  Of course, we will not reach our goal with out the help of family and friends.  Moms and dads will need to help students register on FUNRUN.COM and set up their unique site.  Then, both kids and parents send that link out across the country!  Family and friends anywhere in the world can support our school by giving pledges toward the number of laps your student will run on the day of the MAVERICK Fun Run October 12, 2017. Our 2-week MAVERICK Fun Run program kicks off with a Pep Rally on October 3!

Plus, leading up to the MAVERICK Fun Run, students will learn how to make a difference in their world through an unbelievable character theme, Castle Quest!

  • PTSA REPRESENTATIVES will be on hand to meet & greet and share about this incredible Maverick organization for parents
  • BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN representatives will be available to share about this upcoming Maverick "experience" that is a major fund raising event for us

Both Brent Caldwell, Principal and Sennen Knauer, Assistant Principal, all our Fine Arts specialists, as well as a majority of our intinerant specialists will all be available in the Heart space throughout the entire evening if you would like to visit.  There is a Welcome video being shown in all Learning Communities at 6:20 pm..  Those families that are unable to attend tonight, we will be posting the Welcome video on our school website on Wednesday.  Please remember, Back to School Night is a student led evening and not parent/teacher conference time.  Student Led Conferences are scheduled for October 17, 19 and 25 and are listed on the website school calendar along with important dates.

Doors open at 5:15 pm and announcements to thank everyone for coming will begin promptly at 7:30 pm as the next day is a school day for all our staff :) and we need to let them get home to their families....and their pillows!  Those of you with one student need only to attend one rotation.  Those with two or more have an option within the two built in rotations.

Finally, thank you so very much to everyone who brought food on Monday, September 11 as a gesture of appreciation to our entire staff.  The Taco Bar lunch was delicious and we are so grateful for your children, your partnership in Education and your great skills in cooking!

Go Mavs!

Good Morning Meadowlark Families,
We want to let you know that a gas line was broken by residential construction workers west of school. Xcel Energy and the Fire Department have responded and the gas line has been shut off. All of the appropriate service responders are on the site and working quickly to correct the situation. We have a district employee in our building monitoring air quality and all levels are normal in the building. We are keeping students indoors until the situation is clear. Please know that your students and our staff are safe.
Thank you for your support,
Brent Caldwell, Principal
